Is the 2026/2027 intake open right now?

I couldn’t find a live advert for the maintenance or production streams as of 6 October 2026. Most 2026 Sasol artisan and process adverts have already closed. The Artisan Learnership closed on 02 March 2026, and the Chemical Plant Operator Learnership closed on 06 March 2026. Sasol applications generally open between March and June, so the next big window is probably early 2027. Treat that timing as a pattern, not a promise. sasol artisan learnership programme intake for 2026 apply with matric +2

Create your profile on the portal now so you’re ready when the advert goes live.

What the programmes are

Sasol offers two main learnership families in this area.

Maintenance (artisan trades). Sasol’s Secunda and Sasolburg sites have listed streams including instrumentation, electrical, mechanical fitter, turner, welder, rigger and boilermaker, though the exact streams change each year. Sasol’s Millwright programme, for example, focused on plant, mine and equipment maintenance with strict safety, quality and operational standards.

Production (process operations). These learners operate and monitor chemical production processes, record data and keep plants running safely. Sasol has also advertised a Process Artisan stream. a

Programmes at Secunda and Sasolburg have been described as 24 months long, while other sources list artisan training at up to three years. The advert you apply under will give the exact length. go

Minimum requirements

Requirements vary by stream, so always check the live advert. For artisan streams, Sasol has typically asked for:

  • A Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate with passes in Technical Mathematics or Mathematics, English, and Technical or Physical Science, or a combined N3 certificate that includes Mathematics and Engineering Science
  • A 40% pass in each of those subjects (this figure comes from a third-party listing, so confirm it in the official advert)
  • South African citizenship, since these opportunities are open to South African citizens only
  • Possibly a driver’s licence, medical fitness or a physical test, depending on the streaming

If you did Mathematical Literacy instead of Mathematics, you will most likely not qualify for the technical streams. Check the advert carefully before applying.

Stipend and benefits

One third-party site puts learner stipends at roughly R5,500 to R8,000 a month. Sasol hasn’t confirmed this, so treat it as a rough guide. Beyond the stipend, you get.

  • A recognised qualification and structured workplace training
  • Experience at one of South Africa’s major industrial employers
  • A realistic route to permanent work. Sasol doesn’t formally guarantee a job, but top performers are regularly appointed permanently.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Set up your profile early. Register on careers.sasol.com before adverts open.
  2. Prepare your documents. Have these ready as clear scans:
    • Certified ID copy
    • Matric certificate or N3 results
    • Updated CV
    • Proof of residence
    • Driver’s licence, if the stream requires one
  3. Apply for one stream only. Multiple applications can lead to disqualification.
  4. Use only the official site. Adverts are published on careers.sasol.com and at Sasol’s host-community offices. Applications sent by email or other platforms are generally not accepted.
  5. Submit before the closing date. Late or incomplete applications are usually rejected without review.

What to expect in selection

Technical learnerships include numerical reasoning, mechanical comprehension and an aptitude assessment. You may also face a medical assessment and an interview. To prepare:

  • Practise Maths and Science fundamentals: ratios, formulae, units, basic mechanics and electricity
  • Do free online aptitude and mechanical reasoning practice tests
  • Prepare simple, honest answers on why you want this trade and how you handle safety and teamwork

Mistakes that cost people their place

  • Applying for several streams at once
  • Skipping the fine print on subject requirements
  • Using unofficial links. Several sites copy Sasol’s adverts, so go to the official portal
  • Paying a “fee” to anyone, which is always a scam
  • Waiting for the last day, when portals slow down or crash

Related routes if learnerships don’t work out

  • Technician Development Programme (TDP). Sasol has opened applications for external learner technicians, with the intake starting 1 February 2027, via the Sasol Bursaries website. It’s aimed at people who already hold a qualification in electrical, chemical, mechanical or instrumentation engineering.
  • Sasol bursaries. The 2027 bursary window ran from 1 April to 17 May 2026, so it has closed, but it’s worth watching for next year.
  • Other employers. Eskom, Transnet and merSETA-linked companies run similar technical programmes.

Final advice

The most useful thing you can do now is get your documents and your Maths and Science results in order, and sign up on the official portal. Sasol’s technical intakes are competitive, so being ready when the advert drops matters more than anything else.

I can also put this in a Word document or PDF if you’d like.
