Sanlam is one of Africa’s biggest financial services groups, and its graduate internships are a popular way to get a first job in insurance, finance, tech, marketing or HR. This guide covers the roles, who qualifies, the documents to prepare and how to apply safely.

Official Sanlam Careers Portal (jobs and internships):

Open it, create a candidate profile, and search “graduate” or “intern” to see live roles. Individual job pages change as posts open and close, so the portal is the most reliable link.

Sanlam has warned about a recruitment scam on Facebook and WhatsApp that asks people to send CVs by email or through a link. It advises job seekers to use the official careers portal only. Sanlam never asks for payment to apply. sa

What is the Sanlam Graduate Internship Programme?

The programme is a 12-month placement for unemployed graduates who want to build a career in financial services, and it runs at various Sanlam offices across South Africa. The aim is to close the gap between what you studied and what employers expect. You get real tasks, supervision and exposure to how a large financial group works.

Sanlam recruits in waves, so roles for the 2026/2027 cycle appear at different times. Some listings are already closed and new ones keep appearing.

Roles listed for the 2026/2027 cycle

Recent listings include Human Capital, Risk and Compliance, Marketing, and Client Services Consultant internships, plus the Sanlam Data, AI and Engineering Academy. Other listings have covered Service Management, SharePoint Services, Financial Data Analyst, Vendor Management Administration, Recruitment Support, Graphic Design and Communications, and Data Science.

Typical qualification requirements

One recent set of listings asked for the following:

  • Human Capital: a degree or diploma in Human Resources, Industrial or Organisational Psychology, or a related field (Cape Town).
  • Risk and Compliance: a degree or diploma in Legal, Risk or Compliance studies (Cape Town).
  • Marketing: a diploma or degree in Marketing or Communications (Cape Town).
  • Client Services Consultant: matric with Pure Mathematics plus a relevant financial qualification (Tygervalley).

Some SanlamConnect roles, such as the E-Consultant post in Pretoria, look for a sales and marketing orientation and MS Office skills. They also prefer candidates with little or no work experience. Every advert has its own requirements, so read the full description before you apply. salearnership youth

The Data, AI and Engineering Academy

This is the most competitive option and works differently from a standard internship. It is a 13-month accelerated programme for young South African graduates in data science, AI, analytics, technology and engineering. Selected candidates reportedly get a permanent contract from day one with a market-related salary and full benefits. Graduates finishing their qualification in 2026 can apply if they complete it by the end of the year.

Timing: one listing gave a closing date of 27 September 2026, which has passed. Check the portal for the current status and for later intakes.

Who can apply?

Requirements vary by role, but these apply to most of them:

  1. South African citizenship.
  2. Unemployed status. The programme is aimed at unemployed graduates.
  3. A completed relevant qualification, or one you will finish before the start date.
  4. Availability for the full 12 months.
  5. Little or no work experience, for many roles.
  6. A first-time-employed profile. Interns are usually not already in formal work.

Documents to prepare

Sanlam says an application is not complete without all the required documents. Have these ready as clear PDF scans:

  • An updated CV
  • Certified copy of your ID
  • Matric certificate
  • Academic transcript or proof of qualification
  • Any other documents the specific advert asks for

Also keep a short cover note ready that explains why that particular role and Sanlam interest you.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Go to https://careers.sanlamcloud.co.za/.
  2. Create a candidate profile, or log in if you already have one.
  3. Search for “graduate” or “intern” and filter by location or field.
  4. Read the full description, especially the qualification and closing date.
  5. Upload your documents and complete every field.
  6. Submit, then save the confirmation or reference number.
  7. Check your email, including spam, for updates.

Creating a profile in Sanlam’s talent community also lets you apply to Sanlam, Santam and MiWay. Santam is a separate programme, so it’s worth checking as a second option.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Apply early. Adverts can be withdrawn or closed sooner than expected. Sanlam reserves the right to withdraw an advert before its closing date.
  • Match your qualification to the role. Applying for everything makes you look unfocused. Choose two or three roles that fit.
  • Keep your CV to two pages. Lead with your qualification, projects, volunteering and skills.
  • Use keywords from the advert. If it asks for MS Office, communication or analytical skills, show real examples of each.
  • Prepare for a possible assessment. Financial services employers often use online tests or interviews, so practise numerical and verbal reasoning and read up on Sanlam’s products and values.
  • Be professional online. Update your LinkedIn profile and use a sensible email address.

Things to know before you apply

  • Stipend: many listings do not state the amount, so don’t assume a figure. Ask at interview.
  • Contract length: most internships are fixed-term, so an internship does not automatically become a permanent job. Perform well, network and apply for openings before it ends.
  • Location: roles are spread across cities including Cape Town, Bellville, Tygervalley, Pretoria and Umhlanga, and you are usually responsible for your own relocation.
  • Contact: only shortlisted candidates are normally contacted.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an application fee? No. Anyone asking for money is a scammer.

Can I apply with a diploma? Yes, for many roles. The advert states the exact qualification.

Can I apply for more than one role? Generally yes, if you meet each set of requirements.

When do 2027 roles open? Roles open in waves through the year, so check the portal regularly.

Do I need experience? Often not. Many roles prefer candidates with limited experience, though volunteering and projects help.

Final thoughts

A Sanlam internship gives you a recognised name on your CV, workplace skills and a network in financial services. Prepare your documents now, apply through the official portal only, and check it often for new postings.

I can put this into a Word document or a shorter version for social media if you’d like. Closing dates and requirements change often, so confirm the details on the portal before publishing.
