Important: I could not find a 2027 advert yet. The official page still shows the circular for the 2025 academic year, so this guide uses the department’s standing rules and its most recent adverts. Check the link above regularly, because the 2027 form and dates will appear there first.

Also, this is a bursary programme. I found no separate scholarship from the department, so the guide treats them as one.

What Is This Bursary?

The Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure funds students who study towards careers in the built environment. The department says Limpopo has a shortage of engineers, technicians and other scarce skills needed to establish, maintain and manage government office buildings. The bursary helps fill that gap while giving you financial support.

It also has wider goals. The department aims to address its skills shortage, help previously disadvantaged people acquire needed skills, and promote economic growth, employment and social development.

What Does the Bursary Pay For?

The bursary does not hand you a lump sum. Payment is made after the department receives the statement of account from your institution. The department pays for:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition
  • Meals
  • Accommodation
  • Books

Other adverts say the same: you must submit proof of registration and sign the bursary agreement before any payment is made. Do not expect money before you have registered and signed.

Fields of Study

The department chooses fields according to its own needs, so the list changes from year to year. Here is what has been advertised recently.

The official page (2025 circular) lists:

  • Building Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Architectural Science
  • Landscaping
  • Asset Management
  • Information Technology / Management

A wider list advertised for the 2025 academic year also included:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Construction Management
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Land Surveying
  • Property Science / Real Estate
  • Town and Regional Planning

If your course is not on the 2027 list, apply only if the final advert includes it. Do not rely on an old list.

Who Can Apply?

Based on the official page, you should meet these requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must be studying, or intending to study, towards a degree or diploma at a recognised South African institution.
  • You must be accepted by the university or technikon.
  • You need Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science, or NTC 3 (National Technical Certificates). limpopo
  • Your application must be for the next academic year.
  • You should live in Limpopo. Several adverts state this clearly.

Preference: Applications from designated groups are given preference. The 2024 advert also mentioned emphasis on previously disadvantaged groups and people with disabilities.

A warning about failed modules: You will not be considered if you previously failed, unless you re-write or repeat at your own expense. Strong results really matter here.

When Is the Closing Date?

The official page says the closing date is 31 October every year. That would put the 2027 intake at 31 October 2026, which is only three weeks away from today (10 October 2026).

But the department has not always kept to that date. The 2025 intake closed on 15 November 2024, and one 2024 advert closed on 29 February 2024. Since the 2027 advert has not been confirmed, act as if 31 October is the deadline and prepare now. If the date turns out to be later, you will simply be early.

How to Apply

I cannot give a verified 2027 online application link, because none has been published yet. Here is the safest route:

  1. Open the official page: https://www.dpw.limpopo.gov.za/careers/bursaries.php
  2. Download the current application form. The page carries the full-time external form for the current cycle.
  3. Fill it in clearly and completely. Use blue or black ink if you are writing by hand.
  4. Attach your documents (see the checklist below).
  5. Submit before the closing date.

Past adverts gave these ways to submit:

  • Post to The Senior Manager HRD & PMS, Department of Public Works, Private Bag X9490, Polokwane, 0700.
  • Hand-deliver to Works Towers, 43 Church Street, Polokwane, 0700.
  • Application forms could also be collected at the provincial office or its district offices.

Confirm the exact address in the 2027 advert before you send anything. If you post it, use a trackable service and keep the receipt.

Documents Checklist

Adverts differ slightly, so check the 2027 notice. These are the usual items:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Certified copy of your South African ID
  • Certified copy of your Grade 12 results, or your latest academic record if you are already studying
  • Proof of acceptance or registration at your institution
  • A motivational letter stating why you are applying.
  • Proof of residence in Limpopo, such as a letter from your ward councillor or traditional authority
  • Proof of disability, if it applies to you

Certified copies must be recent. Visit a police station or commissioner of oaths a few days before you plan to submit.

How Selection Works

  1. The department compiles schedules for the selection process.
  2. A Training Committee meets to select candidates.
  3. Successful candidates are notified in writing and must sign a bursary agreement before any payments are made.

Selection can take months. Keep your phone on, check your email, and make sure the contact details on your form are correct.

The Work-Back Obligation

This is the most important thing to understand before you apply. After you finish your studies, you must work for the department for as many years as it sponsored you. If you were funded for four years, expect to serve four years.

There is also a financial penalty. If you break the terms of the bursary agreement, you must immediately refund everything the department paid, plus interest. Read the agreement carefully before you sign it.

Tips to Strengthen Your Application

  • Start now. Collecting certified documents and proof of residence always takes longer than expected.
  • Write a personal motivational letter. Mention a real experience, such as a local road, school or clinic that made you want to work in construction or infrastructure. Keep it to one page.
  • Apply to other funders too. One bursary is never a guarantee. Look at NSFAS, the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA), and municipal or private bursaries as backups.
  • Check every spelling and number. Wrong ID numbers and unsigned forms are common reasons for rejection.
  • Keep copies. Photograph the full application and keep proof of delivery.
  • Beware of scams. The department does not charge application fees. Use only the official website for forms and updates.

Final Thoughts

For 2027, the plan is simple. Keep checking the official page for the new advert, collect your documents now, and assume the deadline could be as early as 31 October. A well-prepared application, submitted early, gives you the best chance.

I can also turn this into a downloadable Word or PDF file, or draft a motivational letter for you. If you tell me your field of study, I can tailor it.
