If you’re a South African student dreaming of a career in mining, engineering, or geosciences, the Harmony Gold Bursary Scheme 2027 could be the golden ticket you’ve been searching for. As one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected gold producers, Harmony doesn’t just mine gold — it invests in people, funding the next generation of mining professionals through full-time tertiary study support.

Here’s everything you need to know before you hit “submit” on your application.

What Is the Harmony Gold Bursary Scheme?

Harmony’s various educational and skills development programmes open doors for ambitious youth looking for a rewarding career in mining, providing financial support alongside real-world experience through internships and graduate programmes. The bursary specifically gives South African Grade 12 learners and current tertiary students an opportunity to pursue full-time studies in fields linked to mining and mineral resources.

Unlike bursaries that vanish into a filing cabinet after graduation, this one is a launchpad — Harmony often provides vacation work, mentorship, and internship opportunities, giving students valuable real-world exposure before they even finish their degree.

Which Fields of Study Are Covered?

Harmony funds bursaries in mining engineering, mining survey, electrical engineering (heavy current only), mechanical engineering, geology, and metallurgy. The bursaries are split across core and non-core fields, with the annual allocation broken down as roughly 60% core and critical disciplines, 30% non-core but mining-related fields, and 10% other disciplines — so there’s some room for students outside the traditional engineering path too.

Am I Eligible?

Before you gather your documents, make sure you tick these boxes:

  • You must be between 18 and 35 years of age
  • You need a valid South African identity document (SA citizens only)
  • You must hold a National Senior Certificate with 60% and above in all subjects
  • If you’re planning to study Engineering, you’ll need a minimum of 70% for Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • Already at university or college? You’ll need an average of 60% or above across all major subjects
  • You must be studying, or planning to study, on a full-time basis

One important catch: the bursary strictly funds full-time studies at recognised public South African universities only — it does not cover TVET colleges or private institutions.

What Documents Will You Need?

Get these ready in advance so you’re not scrambling near the deadline:

  • A brief curriculum vitae, no more than 3 pages.
  • Your full academic transcript if you’re already at a tertiary institution
  • Proof of address.
  • A registration or acceptance letter from your institution (if applicable).
  • A certified copy of your ID and matric certificate/latest academic results

How Does the Selection Process Work?

Harmony gives preference to applicants from communities surrounding its mining operations, so if you’re based near one of its sites, that’s a genuine advantage. Historically, around 70% of bursary recipients have come from communities in and around Harmony’s operations — proof this isn’t just a box-ticking exercise.

That said, applications are still open to any eligible South African student nationwide. Fill the application form thoroughly in block letters using black ink, and remember: incomplete forms will be disregarded, so double-check every field before submitting.

Applying After the Deadline?

Timing matters more than you might think. If you don’t hear back 30 days after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful, since correspondence is limited to shortlisted applicants only.

What You Get in Return

If selected, this isn’t a “study now, forget us later” arrangement. Recipients are typically required to work for Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited for a period equal to the duration of the bursary funding received — essentially, your studies are an investment in a guaranteed career start, not just a hand-out.

When Does It Open?

Here’s where it gets a little tricky — Harmony’s own careers page states the 2027 intake will open in October 2026, while a few third-party job boards report the intake as already open with a closing date around 9 October 2026. Given this discrepancy, your safest move is to bookmark the official page above and check it directly for the confirmed opening and closing dates before you start preparing documents against a deadline that hasn’t been officially locked in yet.

Quick Tips Before You Apply

  • Apply early. Don’t wait until the week before the deadline — printing, certifying documents, and getting reference letters takes time.
  • Be precise on the form. Block letters, black ink, no skipped sections.
  • Match your subjects to your field. If you’re eyeing Engineering, your Maths and Science marks need to hit that 70% bar specifically.
  • Highlight community ties if relevant. If you’re from a mining-adjacent community, mention it — it genuinely factors into selection.
  • Keep a copy of everything you submit, including proof of the email or postal submission.
