City of Johannesburg Bursary 2027: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply

Funding is often what decides whether a young person can study at all. The City of Johannesburg Bursary 2027 is meant to help with that. This guide covers what the bursary pays for, who can apply, which documents to prepare, and how to avoid the mistakes that sink applications.

Quick Facts

  • Closing date: Friday, 30 October 2026. That is under four weeks away.
  • Number of bursaries: 200
  • Maximum value: R40,000 per academic year
  • Level of study: full-time undergraduate at an accredited South African institution
  • Application method: online only
  • Renewable: yes, if your academic results stay satisfactory

Where to Apply

Go to the official City of Johannesburg website at www.joburg.org.za. Click “Vacancies”, then choose the Bursaries and Learnerships option.

I found this link on a page that is about a year old, so it may be from the previous intake. Before you fill anything in, open joburg.org.za and check that the Vacancies page points to the same form. Applying through the wrong form is the easiest way to waste your effort.

You can also call the City’s bursary contact. One listing names Billy Baloyi at (011) 407 6979. That listing is also not recent, so confirm the number on the official site.

What the Bursary Pays For

The bursary can help with tuition fees, registration fees, prescribed books and study materials. The ceiling is R40,000 per year. If your course costs more, you will have to cover the difference yourself or find a second funder.

It does not cover everything. Accommodation, transport and food are not on the list, so plan for those separately.

Who Can Apply

The City aims this bursary at South African citizens who permanently live in Johannesburg. An earlier version of the programme also asked that applicants have finished matric or be in matric now, and study a qualification that lasts at least one year. The 2027 listing repeats the one-year rule. Check the official advert to see whether anything else has changed.

In short, you should be able to say yes to each of these:

  • I am a South African citizen.
  • I live permanently in the Johannesburg area.
  • I have matric, or I am writing it now.
  • I want to study full-time at undergraduate level.
  • My course lasts at least one year.
  • My institution is accredited in South Africa.

The bursary does not cover postgraduate study.

How Winners Are Chosen

Selection is based on academic merit. Your marks matter most, so make sure your latest results are included and easy to read.

Money may also play a part. You must give verifiable proof of your household income when you apply. Do not skip this item.

Documents to Prepare

Start collecting these now. Official copies can take days to arrange. Past requirements have included:

  1. A CV
  2. Your most recent academic record
  3. Your South African ID
  4. Proof that you live in Johannesburg
  5. Proof of household income, or an affidavit
  6. Proof that you have applied to, or been accepted by, a tertiary institution

The first five items should be certified copies. Certification must also be recent. Many departments want it done within the last three to six months. A police station or commissioner of oaths can certify your copies.

Scan everything clearly. Make sure each uploaded document is readable before you submit. A blurry file can get a whole application thrown out.

Step-by-Step Application Plan

Step 1: Apply to your institution first. The bursary does not replace the university admission process, and it does not guarantee you a place. Get your application in and keep proof of it.

Step 2: Gather and certify your documents. Use the list above and tick each item off.

Step 3: Open the official form. Use joburg.org.za or the link above, after checking it.

Step 4: Fill in every field. Leave no section blank. Check your ID number, phone number and email twice.

Step 5: Upload your files. Use clear scans, and name each file so you can recognise it later.

Step 6: Submit before 30 October 2026. Do not wait for the last day. Websites slow down when many people apply at once.

Step 7: Save your confirmation. Take a screenshot or keep the email.

What Happens After You Apply

Expect to wait. If you hear nothing within six weeks of the closing date, you can assume your application was unsuccessful. Check your email and spam folder often during that time. Keep your phone on and your number unchanged.

Once you are in, renewal depends on your results. The bursary is renewable, subject to academic performance. Passing your modules is how you keep the money.

Mistakes That Cost Applicants Their Chance

  • Waiting until the last week. Certification and scanning take time.
  • Using an old form. Always get the form from the official site, because forms from unofficial sources may be out of date, which can invalidate your application.
  • Sending incomplete documents. An earlier call for applications warned that missing items may lead to disqualifications
  • Forgetting proof of residence. The bursary is for people who live in Johannesburg, so this document matters.
  • Unclear scans. If the City cannot read it, it cannot count it.
  • Skipping your university application. Funding without a place on a course is of no use.

Smart Extras

Apply for more than one bursary. The City’s 200 places will attract many applicants, so a backup plan is wise. Other municipal and public-entity bursaries for 2027 are listed on sites such as ZA Bursaries, including City Power Johannesburg and Johannesburg Water.

Keep a folder, on your phone and in the cloud, with every certified document. You will reuse it for other applications.

Final Word

You have under four weeks. Open the official website, check the form, certify your documents and apply early. A complete, clear application is your best chance of landing one of the 200 places.

Good luck.

Would you like this saved as a Word document or a file you can paste straight onto a website?
