1. What Is the Northam Zondereinde External Bursary?

The Zondereinde External Bursary Programme is a funding opportunity from Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde Mine. It is open to academically strong South African students who want to study a recognised qualification at a university or university of technology in 2027.

The word “external” matters. It means you do not have to work at the mine or be related to someone who does. In earlier years Northam also ran a separate Employee Trust Bursary for the children and spouses of Zondereinde employees. I could not confirm that it is running for 2027. If you are an employee’s dependant, ask Career Wise.

Bursary or scholarship? Only a bursary is advertised for 2027. Bursaries are usually awarded for a specific field of study and often take a student’s circumstances into account. Scholarships are usually based on academic merit alone. I found no separate Zondereinde scholarship, so treat this as a single opportunity.

2. About Zondereinde Mine

Zondereinde is a platinum group metals (PGM) mine in Limpopo, about 40 kilometres from Thabazimbi. PGMs are valuable metals used in many industries.

A mine like this runs on far more than miners. It needs:

  • Engineers to design, power, repair and process
  • Geologists and surveyors to understand and map the ore
  • Accountants and procurement staff to manage money and supplies
  • Safety and occupational hygiene specialists to protect workers
  • Environmental specialists to manage the mine’s impact on land and water
  • HR and communication professionals to manage people and relationships

This explains why the bursary supports 15 fields instead of only mining engineering.

4. Who Can Apply?

South African citizenship

You must be a South African citizen with a valid South African identity document.

Minimum 60% academic performance

What counts depends on where you are in your studies:

  • You have finished Matric. You must have passed all subjects, with an overall aggregate of at least 60%.
  • You are in Grade 12 this year. You can submit your Grade 11 results and whatever Grade 12 results you already have. You will still need to meet the final requirements once your Matric results are out.
  • You are already at university. You need at least 60% in your major subjects, and your current-year results must be included.

Meeting 60% does not guarantee a bursary. It is the minimum needed to be considered.

Proof of admission

First-year applicants must show admission, or provisional admission, to a recognised institution for the qualification they want. The bursary does not help you get into university. Apply to your university separately and keep your proof.

A qualification that matches one of the 15 fields

Your course must fit the list in the next section.

5. The 15 Fields of Study

  1. Mining Engineering. Planning and managing how ore is safely removed from the ground.
  2. Electrical Engineering. Power supply, electrical systems and control equipment.
  3. Mechanical Engineering. Machinery, equipment and maintenance.
  4. Metallurgical Engineering. Separating and processing valuable metals from ore.
  5. Chemical Engineering. Chemical processes used in processing.
  6. Analytical Chemistry. Testing and measuring the composition of materials.
  7. Human Resources Management. Recruitment, development and people management.
  8. Financial Management / Accounting. Budgets, reporting and financial control.
  9. Mining Survey. Measuring and mapping mine areas.
  10. Geology. Studying rocks and mineral deposits.
  11. Occupational Hygiene. Managing workplace health hazards such as dust, noise and chemicals.
  12. Safety Management. Preventing accidents and managing safety systems.
  13. Environmental Management / Environmental Sciences. Protecting land, water and air.
  14. Communication Management / Graphic Design. Communication, branding and design.
  15. Supply Chain Management / Procurement / Logistics. Buying, storing and moving goods.

Tip: If your course name is not exactly on this list, do not guess. Email Career Wise with your qualification name and ask whether it fits.

6. Community Preference Explained

Northam Zondereinde has said it will give preference to students from communities around its mining operation. Career Wise has specifically mentioned the Waterberg and Moses Kotane districts.

What this means for you:

  • You live in or near these areas. You may have an advantage. Make sure the address in your application is accurate.
  • You live elsewhere. Preference is not the same as a stated ban on other students. Email Career Wise and ask whether you can still apply.

Always tell the truth about where you live. Funders can verify addresses, and false information can disqualify you.

7. What Might the Bursary Cover?

The published information confirms that external bursary support is offered, but it does not state a rand value or list every cost covered. Do not assume it pays for everything.

If you receive an offer, ask these questions before signing:

  • Does it cover tuition and registration?
  • Does it cover accommodation?
  • Does it cover textbooks?
  • Is there money for meals and living costs?
  • Is there transport assistance?
  • What marks must I maintain to keep the bursary?
  • How does yearly renewal work?
  • Do I have to work back or repay anything?
  • What happens if I change course or fail a module?

Receiving the bursary does not automatically mean a permanent job at Northam after graduation. Read the contract carefully.

8. Documents You Need

All documents must be certified copies. The exact set depends on your situation.

If you have completed Matric

  • Valid South African ID
  • National Senior Certificate
  • Proof of admission or provisional admission, where applicable

If you are currently in Grade 12

  • Valid South African ID
  • Grade 11 results
  • Available Grade 12 results
  • Proof of provisional admission, where applicable

If you are already studying at university

  • Valid South African ID
  • Academic records
  • Current-year results
  • Anything else the Career Wise system requests

Check the portal for the final list, because the system may ask for more.

9. How to Prepare and Certify Your Documents

Certification means an authorised person confirms that your copy matches the original. Take your original documents and photocopies to the right person, usually at a police station or similar office, and get them stamped and signed. Do this early.

Then follow these rules:

  • Scan every page. If a page has writing on the back, scan that too.
  • Keep scans clear. Text, stamps and signatures must be readable.
  • Name your files simply. For example “ID”, “Matric Certificate”, “University Results”.
  • Check your details match. Your name and ID number should be the same on every document.
  • Open each file after uploading. Make sure it is not corrupted.
  • Never alter or borrow documents. This can lead to disqualification.

10. Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1: Open the official portal.
Go to https://careerwise.co.za/bursaries/online-application/. Use this site only.

Step 2: Create or open your profile.
Register with your full name, ID number, email address and cellphone number. Use an email you check daily, because this is how you may be contacted.

Step 3: Find the Northam Zondereinde External Bursary 2027.
Look for the 2027 programme. Enter promotion code NZE27 when the system asks.

Step 4: Fill in your academic information.
Add your school or university results, your chosen qualification and the institution.

Step 5: Upload your certified documents.
Attach everything required for your category.

Step 6: Review everything.
Check spelling, contact details, marks, the bursary programme and attachments.

Step 7: Submit and save your confirmation.
Keep any reference number or confirmation message.

Questions? Use the contact details on the Career Wise portal. Do not send personal documents through unverified social media accounts.

11. Mistakes That Cost Students Their Chance

  • Waiting until the last day. Websites slow down near deadlines.
  • Choosing a course outside the 15 fields.
  • Missing proof of admission (first-year applicants).
  • Using the reference number instead of the promotion code.
  • Unreadable scans.
  • Uncertified documents.
  • Wrong contact details, so you miss a message.
  • Inconsistent information between your form and documents.
  • Assuming 60% guarantees selection.

12. Choosing the Right Course

Because there are 15 fields, think carefully about which suits you:

  • Like maths, science and problem solving? Look at the engineering fields, analytical chemistry or geology.
  • Prefer working with numbers and money? Look at accounting and financial management.
  • Enjoy working with people? Human resources or communication management may suit you.
  • Care about safety and health? Consider safety management or occupational hygiene.
  • Care about nature and land? Consider environmental sciences.
  • Creative? Graphic design sits under communication.
  • Organised and practical? Supply chain and logistics could be a fit.

Remember that engineering degrees have strict entry rules, usually in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and a 60% overall average may not meet them. Check your university’s requirements for your exact course.

13. Preparing Your Marks and Admission

  • Apply to universities as well. Do not rely on one bursary.
  • Keep your marks strong. If you are in Grade 12, your final results matter.
  • Save your admission letters as clear PDFs.
  • Know your university’s deadlines. They are separate from the bursary deadline.

14. After You Apply

  • Check your email and phone regularly, including spam folders.
  • Do not contact Career Wise repeatedly for updates unless needed. Keep your confirmation handy if you must.
  • Be ready for extra requests, such as more documents or information.
  • Keep applying elsewhere. A pending application is not an award.

15. If You Are Not Selected

Many strong students miss out because funding is limited. Do not give up. Consider:

  • NSFAS, the national financial aid scheme, if you meet its conditions
  • Other company bursaries with 2027 deadlines
  • University financial aid offices, which can advise on internal funding
  • SETA and municipal funding where applicable
  • Applying again next year if you are continuing your studies

Check each programme’s official channels for current details.

16. Scam Warnings

  • Genuine bursaries do not charge application fees.
  • Nobody can guarantee you selection.
  • Beware of WhatsApp or Facebook “agents” asking for money or documents.
  • Do not share your banking passwords or OTPs with anyone.
  • Apply only through the official link: https://careerwise.co.za/bursaries/online-application/

17. Frequently Asked Questions

Can Grade 12 learners apply?
