Status check: The most recent listing I found was posted on 16 June 2026. One copy of the advert shows a notice that the job has expired, and the posting lists no closing date. So I can’t confirm that applications are open today. Check the portal below for live vacancies before you start.

About the V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a 123-hectare mixed-use development in Cape Town. It combines residential and commercial property, hotels, retail, dining, leisure and entertainment, and it draws both local and international visitors.

A site this size runs on electrical systems every hour of the day, including lighting, power distribution, building services and control systems. That is why it needs a steady pipeline of trained electrical staff.

What the apprenticeship involves

The advert describes a full-time Electrical Apprentice position in the Western Cape, listed under Engineering/Technical and Internships. You work under supervision, and your responsibilities grow step by step. The main stages are:

  • Planning and preparation: getting ready for electrical installations and control systems.
  • Installing, wiring and connecting: first by observing and assisting, then by doing the work yourself under supervision.
  • Testing and inspecting: checking equipment, control systems and installations.
  • Commissioning: bringing completed installations into working order.
  • Maintenance: looking after equipment, control systems and installations.

At every stage you work under the direct supervision of a qualified electrician. The goal is to learn safely, not to work alone from day one.

Requirements

The advert asks for the following:

  • The ability to learn on the job
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols
  • Fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • A commitment of six months
  • At least three to six months of experience in an electrical environment

The qualification field in the advert was left blank. Read the official advert carefully for any matric, NCV or N-level requirement.

How long does it last?

The Electrical Apprentice advert requires you to commit to a six-month period. For comparison, the V&A Waterfront’s 2026 Mechanical Apprentice programme runs for six to nine months. That is a different trade, so treat it only as a rough guide to how the Waterfront structures these placements. Confirm the exact duration for the electrical role in the official advert.

A related role to watch

The V&A Waterfront also advertised an Electrical Assistant role in June 2025. It covered call-outs, daily checks, fault finding, electrical maintenance on buildings and infrastructure, and weekly reporting to a supervisor. If the apprenticeship is closed, similar entry-level electrical openings may appear on the same portal

What to do before you apply

  1. Open the portal and look for the Electrical Apprentice vacancy, including its closing date.
  2. Read the full advert for qualifications, location and contract length.
  3. Create your profile with accurate contact details you check often.
  4. Update your CV so it shows electrical exposure, however small. Wiring practice, workshop training, site visits or helping a qualified electrician all count.
  5. Prepare your documents and have them ready as clear PDF or image scans.
  6. Submit early. Do not wait for the last day.

Documents to have ready

The advert doesn’t list documents, so this is general South African practice. Many employers ask for these:

  • A certified copy of your ID
  • Your matric certificate or latest results
  • Any trade, college or short-course certificates
  • A current CV
  • References, if requested

CV tips

  • Lead with electrical experience. The advert asks for time in an electrical environment, so put that near the top.
  • Name your tasks. Write “assisted with fitting distribution boards” rather than “helped with electrical work.”
  • Show safety awareness. Mention safety induction, PPE use or lockout procedures.
  • Keep it to two pages and check your spelling.

Interview preparation

Expect questions on:

  • Basic electrical safety and what you would do if you spotted a hazard
  • How you would approach fault finding
  • Working under supervision and following instructions
  • Why you want the apprenticeship and why the Waterfront
  • Your ability to commit for the full period

Practise answering with real examples from your training or experience.

Avoid scams

Legitimate employers do not charge applicants to apply or to be considered. Be careful with anyone who asks for payment, bank details or a “registration fee.” Use only the official portal.

Final word

The opportunity is real: a supervised, hands-on electrical placement at one of Cape Town’s best-known destinations. The one thing I couldn’t verify is whether the 2026/2027 intake is open right now. Go to https://waterfront.mcidirecthire.com, check for the live vacancy, and apply as early as you can.

I can also turn this into a Word or PDF file, or write a CV summary and cover letter for this role.
