Dreaming of studying at North-West University in 2027? Getting admitted is only half the job. You also need to sort out how you’ll pay for it. Here is a clear guide to NSFAS funding for NWU students, with the dates, steps and mistakes to watch for.
Apply for NSFAS here

Applications are free. Never pay anyone to apply for you, and never share your myNSFAS password.
The deadline problem (read this first)
NSFAS applications for 2027 opened on 18 September 2026. The closing date is where it gets messy, because the sources disagree. The NSFAS application webpage shows 31 October 2026, but the Minister announced 18 November 2026 at the launch. Another report says NSFAS states that its Board has communicated there will be no extension. NSFAS Applications 2027 Now Open: Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply +2
Treat 31 October 2026 as your real deadline. It is the earlier date, so you lose nothing by using it. Today is 10 October, which leaves you about three weeks. Apply now.
NSFAS and NWU are two separate applications
Many students get this wrong. Applying for admission at NWU and applying for NSFAS funding are separate processes. Getting into NWU does not apply you for funding, and getting NSFAS funding does not get you admitted. You also shouldn’t assume NSFAS will pay the NWU application fee.
You must do both.
Have you already applied to NWU?
Check this today. According to published NWU dates, selection courses closed on 30 June 2026, and general courses and residence applications closed on 31 August 2026. Postgraduate applications close on 30 November 2026.
If you missed the undergraduate dates, contact NWU’s admissions office directly and ask whether your programme still has space. Don’t rely on social media posts for this.
Who can get NSFAS funding?
The usual rules (confirm them on the NSFAS site) are:
- You are a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Your household’s combined annual income is within the NSFAS limit, which has historically been R350,000.
- You are a SASSA grant recipient, or you qualify through the household income test.
- You have been, or will be, admitted to a public university or TVET college.
If you don’t qualify for a bursary, NSFAS also offers a student loan for “missing middle” students who need support but fall outside bursary funding.
What NSFAS funding usually covers
Funding is generally aimed at tuition, accommodation, learning materials and a living allowance. Exact amounts and conditions can change each year, so check the current NSFAS guidance for your situation.
One thing to know: NSFAS has a limited budget, and the number of applications received will determine how funding is allocated. That is why applying early matters. More than 51,000 applications came in during the first four days.
What to prepare before you start
Gather these documents so you can finish in one sitting:
- Your South African ID (certified copy if required)
- ID copies for your parents or guardians
- Proof of household income, such as payslips or an affidavit if unemployed
- A SASSA outcome letter, if applicable
- The signed NSFAS consent form
- A working email address and cellphone number
Use only the current 2027 forms. Avoid old forms circulating on WhatsApp groups or other websites.
Step-by-step: how to apply
- Go to my.nsfas.org.za.
- Create a myNSFAS account, or log in if you have one.
- Fill in your personal and household details carefully.
- Upload your documents. Make sure the scans are clear.
- Submit your application.
- Keep checking your myNSFAS profile and email for updates.
Mistakes that cost students funding
- Waiting for the deadline. Portals slow down when everyone rushes at the end.
- Missing or unclear documents. Blurry uploads are a common reason for delays.
- Wrong household details. Mismatched income information can lead to rejection.
- Skipping the NWU application. Funding means nothing without admission.
- Trusting unofficial sites. Only use the official NSFAS and NWU websites.
What happens after you apply
Track your status on myNSFAS and read every notification. If your application is declined, you can lodge an appeal through your account, so check the appeal window on the NSFAS site and act quickly. NWU may also ask you to confirm your funding status when you register.
Final tips
- Apply for NSFAS this week, not at the deadline.
- Confirm your NWU admission status.
- Apply for residence early if you need accommodation.
- Look at NWU bursaries as a backup.
- Keep copies of everything you submit.
Funding rules and dates change, so confirm the details on nsfas.org.za and the NWU website before you submit.
I can also put this in a Word document or shorten it into a social media post. Just say which you’d like.
