SA Government Graduate Internship Programme 2027: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply

I’ve assumed “SA” means South Africa, since that’s where the 2027 government graduate internships are being advertised right now. If you meant South Australia, tell me and I’ll rewrite it.

South African government departments and public entities offer graduate internships to unemployed graduates who need real workplace experience. The programmes run for months or even two years, and most pay a monthly stipend. Some of the 2027 intakes are closing very soon, so read this guide first and then apply.

What Is a Government Graduate Internship?

These internships are usually offered by individual government departments and typically last 12 to 24 months. Many provide a monthly stipend and mentorship, with areas such as information technology, administration and finance among the fields on offer.

An internship is not a permanent job, but it gives you a work record, references and practical skills. Those are the things employers ask for when you apply for entry-level roles.

Programmes to Look At Right Now

1. Government Printing Works (GPW): Closing 19 October 2026

This is the programme closing soonest. GPW is offering 45 graduate internship posts for the 2027/2029 financial year, based in Pretoria and East London, with a stipend of R8,174.75 per month. The programme lasts 24 months, and the closing date is 19 October 2026 at 16:00.

2. Western Cape Government: Graduate Internship Programme 2026/2027

Its listed closing date was 7 September 2026, so this round has already passed. I’m including it so you can plan ahead. Placements run for 3 to 24 months in provincial departments, and applicants must be South African citizens aged 20 to 35 who live in the Western Cape and hold a completed qualification at NQF Level 5 or higher. Applications are online only, and emailed, faxed or late applications are not accepted. Watch the Western Cape eRecruit platform for the next indexed

3. National departments and public entities

The Department of Employment and Labour has run a 24-month graduate internship programme. Its page is https://www.labour.gov.za/graduate-internship-programme-for-2025-to-2027-%2824-months%29. That page covers the 2025 to 2027 cycle, so check it for newer adverts. The Presidency’s 2025/2027 programme also closed in December 2024, which shows how these cycles repeat.

4. Other public bodies with 2026/2027 intakes

SAHPRA, the health products regulator, advertised six 12-month internships in Pretoria for graduates in health, biological, pharmaceutical and laboratory sciences. Check its careers page to see whether the post is still open.

Who Can Apply?

Requirements differ slightly between departments, but the same rules appear again and again:

  • You must be a South African citizen. The Presidency’s advert, for example, targeted unemployed South African graduates under 35.
  • You must be unemployed.
  • You must not have done an internship before. Only graduates who have not previously been employed under any internship programme are considered.
  • You need a completed qualification in a field the advert lists. This is often NQF Level 5 or higher, so check each post.
  • Foreign qualifications must be evaluated. It is the applicant’s responsibility to have foreign qualifications evaluated by SAQA.

Documents to Prepare Before You Start

Missing documents are the commonest reason applications are thrown out. Applications generally go on a Z83 form with a comprehensive CV, and failing to submit the requested documents means your application won’t be considered. Prepare

  1. A completed, signed Z83 form (one per position)
  2. An up-to-date CV that matches your Z83 exactly
  3. A certified copy of your ID
  4. Certified copies of your qualifications and academic record
  5. A SAQA certificate, if you studied abroad
  6. Any extra items named in the advert

Some bodies, such as SACE, want certified copies that are no more than six months old. Get your certifications done early.

How to Apply Step by Step

  1. Read the full advert, including the reference number, required qualification and closing date.
  2. Check that you qualify for the specific post.
  3. Fill in a separate Z83 for each position. GPW requires a separate application for every post. The Presidency’s advert required a separate application for each field of study.
  4. Put the reference number on your application or in your email subject line.
  5. Submit through the channel the advert names, whether that’s an online portal, email or hand delivery.
  6. Keep proof of submission (an email receipt or screenshot).

What Happens After You Apply

Government hiring is slow, and replies often don’t come. The Presidency’s advert, for instance, said that if you haven’t heard back within three months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful. Shortlisted candidates also go through pre-employment screening. Expect checks on your qualifications, ID and possibly your criminal record, so make sure everything on your CV is accurate.

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

  • Applying after the closing time, which can be 16:00 sharp
  • Sending one application for several posts
  • Using an old or unsigned Z83 form
  • Uncertified or out-of-date copies
  • A CV that contradicts the Z83
  • Applying when you’ve already done an internship

Smart Tips for Success

  • Apply before the deadline, not on it. Portals and email servers slow down at the last minute.
  • Tailor your CV to the field in the advert.
  • Watch for scams. Genuine government internships never charge application fees.
  • Check official sources. Aggregator sites help you find adverts, but confirm details against the department’s own advert.
  • Apply widely. Different departments and agencies run their own intakes.

Final Thoughts

A government graduate internship can be the first step in your career. The GPW programme closes on 19 October 2026, so prepare your documents now and apply to that one first.

I can add more programmes if you tell me your field of study or province. I can also turn this into a Word document or a formatted web page.
