Dates and rules below were checked on 2 October 2026. Confirm them on the NSFAS site before you submit.
The short version
The 2027 NSFAS application cycle opened on 18 September 2026 and closes on 18 November 2026, according to the Minister’s launch statement. Some websites still show 31 October as the deadline. That date appears to be outdated, so plan around 18 November and don’t wait for the last week.
Funding is not admission
NSFAS pays for your studies, but it does not get you a place. Receiving NSFAS funding does not guarantee admission, and you must apply separately to your chosen institution. You need to do both.
Admission deadlines are often earlier than the funding one. Applications to public TVET colleges for 2027 closed on 30 September 2026. Check each university or college directly for its own deadline.
Who can apply
NSFAS funding is mainly for South African citizens and permanent residents who study, or plan to study, at a public university or TVET college. Private institutions are not eligible, regardless of household income.
The income limits are:
- Standard bursary: a gross combined household income of R350,000 or less per year, meaning income before tax and other deductions.
- Applicants with a disability: R600,000 or less per year.
- SASSA grant recipients: they automatically meet the financial requirement, though the R350 SRD grant is excluded. Other NSFAS conditions still apply.
If your household earns more than R350,000, funding is harder, but not always impossible. Some guides say a student loan may be available for incomes between R350,001 and R600,000, but it must be repaid. Ask NSFAS which options apply to you.
What NSFAS covers
Funding can cover registration fees, tuition, learning materials, accommodation or transport, and a personal care allowance. If you live more than 40 km from campus, NSFAS pays for university residence or accredited private accommodation. Exact amounts depend on your institution and your situation.
Documents to prepare
Gather these before you start. The portal may ask for different documents depending on your answers.
- A certified copy of your ID and a signed consent form.
- ID copies for your parents or guardian, if you’re a dependent.
- Proof of income, such as a payslip or appointment letter.
- Disability documents or orphan/vulnerable child declarations, if they apply to you.
- Other documents where relevant, such as death certificates or divorce decrees.
NSFAS also verifies information independently. It checks details against independent third-party data sources, so make sure everything you declare is accurate.
How to apply, step by step
- Go to my.nsfas.org.za.
- Create a myNSFAS account using your South African ID number, cellphone number and email address. If you already have one, just log in.
- Select the option to apply for funding and fill in your personal and household details.
- Upload your supporting documents.
- Submit, then keep checking your account for document requests and status updates.
You can apply on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
What’s new for 2027
NSFAS has introduced several changes. These include direct extraction of student information from institutional systems, automated document verification, electronic document signing, and stronger checks of registration and banking details with Home Affairs. The aim is fewer errors and faster processing.
When you’ll hear back
Funding outcomes are expected to be communicated to successful applicants in December, ahead of registration. If you’re rejected, you can log in to your portal, check the reason, and submit a formal appeal with supporting documents.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying anyone. NSFAS applications are free. Be careful if someone asks for money to apply on your behalf.
- Waiting until the deadline. Applying early gives you time to verify your information, send missing documents and get help if something goes wrong.
- Assuming a funding application covers admission. It doesn’t.
- Sharing your login details. Protect your personal information.
- Unclear scans. Upload clear, complete documents.
Final tip
Apply for admission and for NSFAS at the same time, and aim to finish your funding application well before 18 November.
