Introduction

The University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein, South Africa, regularly recruits postdoctoral research fellows across many disciplines. For researchers who have just finished a doctorate, it is a way to build a publication record, develop independent projects and gain research experience at an African university. This guide explains how the fellowships work, what they pay, who qualifies and how to prepare a strong application.

The most important thing to understand first

UFS does not run one central “Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027” with a single form and a single deadline. Individual departments advertise their own positions, each with its own research focus, closing date, contact person and sometimes its own funding level.

Applications also go through different channels:

  • The official online portal. Some adverts state that applications may only be submitted through the official UFS vacancy website, and that submissions through other platforms will not be considered.
  • Email to a named academic. Other adverts ask applicants to email their documents by the deadline to a named contact and sometimes to copy a second person.

The advert for the exact position you want is the final authority. Third-party job sites and blogs, including this article, are only guides.

Fellowships advertised for 2027

These are the 2027 positions I found:

  1. Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science. This Bloemfontein Campus fellowship encourages applicants with experience or a strong interest in Bayesian methods and mixed models.
  2. Animal Science (wildlife). The department is recruiting a fellow in wildlife science, wildlife management, conservation biology and sustainable natural-resource management, starting in 2027.
  3. Childhood Education. Two posts are listed for research in Early Childhood Development and Learning.

The pages I could see did not show closing dates. Confirm each deadline on the official advert, because UFS adverts often close within weeks of posting. Many 2026 deadlines have already passed.

What the fellowship pays

Amounts differ by department and funding source, but several recent adverts follow the same pattern:

  • R270,000 annual fellowship plus a R30,000 research expenses fund.
  • One Education Management fellowship at the Qwaqwa Campus offered R220,000 plus the R30,000 research fund.
  • A fellowship funded from an external research grant can be higher. One earlier grant-linked advert listed R300,000.

One advert described the amount as tax-free. Tax treatment can depend on your own circumstances, so check the wording in your advert and get professional advice if you are unsure. caree

Duration

Contract lengths vary:

  • A one-year contract, renewable up to two years.
  • A one-year contract, renewable up to three years.
  • Two-year fellowships subject to annual renewal based on satisfactory progress. careers24

Renewal is not automatic. It usually depends on your progress and outputs, so plan your first year accordingly.

Who can apply

Nationality. The fellowships are open to South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at UFS. International applicants are welcome.

Qualification. You need a recent doctorate in a relevant field. Some posts add a limit on how old the PhD may be. One earlier advert said that applicants whose PhD was five years old or more could not apply. Check whether your advert has a similar rule.

Employment. Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship. If you are currently employed full-time, you would need to leave that job before starting. c

Residence. Most adverts describe the fellowship as residential and require 80% of the period at UFS. Some are stricter. One advert required 100% of the period at UFS. Also note the campus. One Education post required residence at the Qwaqwa Campus rather than Bloemfontein. 2368postdoctoral research fellowship regenerative grazing practices grazing management systems1 +2

Relocation. Some adverts say successful applicants must be able to relocate to UFS for the duration of the fellowship. Plan for housing, travel and any visa requirements early.

What you will be expected to do

Duties vary, but common expectations include:

  • Starting your own research projects and seeking funding for them.
  • Registering and residing as a postdoctoral research fellow, and taking part in activities of your faculty, the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research Development. careers24
  • Participating in interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Publishing your research, preparing proposals and building research partnerships, as the Animal Science advert for 2027 outlines.

How applications are assessed

Fellowships are awarded competitively, based on academic achievements, publication output and research potential. In practice, reviewers look for these things:

  • A strong doctoral record.
  • Publications, or manuscripts that are clearly on the way.
  • A research plan that fits the department and can be completed in the time available.
  • Evidence that you can work independently and attract funding.

Documents to prepare

The exact list varies, so use your advert’s list. These are the items you will most likely need:

  1. Motivation letter. One advert asked for a letter detailing the postdoctoral research agenda, including a 1–2 page outline of relevant expertise and experience. Others ask for an outline of the proposed project.
  2. Curriculum vitae with a full publication list.
  3. Proof of your qualifications, including your PhD certificate or confirmation of its award.
  4. Referees’ details, if your advert asks for them.

Gather everything before you start. Online portals can time out, and rushed uploads cause mistakes.

Step-by-step: how to apply

  1. Open the official portal at https://ufs.hua.hrsmart.com/hr/ats/JobSearch/viewAll and search for “postdoctoral”.
  2. Find your department’s advert and read it completely, including the closing date.
  3. Check the submission method. If the advert says online-only, use the portal. If it gives an email address, send your documents there before the deadline.
  4. Contact the named person first with a short, polite message and your research summary. Ask whether your project fits their group.
  5. Tailor your documents to that department and project.
  6. Submit early and keep a copy of everything, including a confirmation or a sent email.

Tips for a stronger application

  • Match the focus. The Statistics post, for example, names Bayesian methods and mixed models. Say explicitly how your skills line up with those topics.
  • Show a funding plan. Many posts expect you to seek research funding, so name the funders you would approach.
  • Keep it readable. Reviewers read many applications. Short paragraphs and a clear structure help.
  • Be specific about outputs. State how many papers you could produce during the fellowship and where you would target them.
  • Proofread. Typos in a motivation letter look careless.
  • Know the equity policy. UFS publishes its Employment Equity Plan and links to it in its adverts. Read it so you understand the university’s context.
  • Meet every requirement. UFS only considers candidates who meet all the inherent requirements of the position.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying through the wrong channel.
  • Missing the closing date.
  • Sending a generic letter that does not mention the department.
  • Overlooking the no-full-time-employment and residence rules.
  • Leaving out publications or the project outline.

Quick checklist

  • Doctorate completed or confirmed
  • Department and position chosen
  • Deadline and submission method confirmed
  • Motivation letter and project outline written
  • CV and publication list updated
  • Qualification documents scanned
  • Relocation and residence plan considered
  • Application submitted early

Final word

A UFS postdoctoral fellowship offers funding, mentorship and time to build an independent research profile. Use the official portal, read your advert carefully and tailor everything to the department.

If you tell me your field and PhD topic, I can help you draft the motivation letter or research outline. I can also put this article into a Word or PDF file if you’d like one to keep.
