2027 application dates at a glance

  • Applications opened: 1 April 2026
  • Most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes: close 30 September 2026
  • MBChB (Medicine): closed 30 July 2026
  • International students: also closed 30 July 2026
  • Master’s in Clinical Psychology: closed 30 June 2026
  • Residence applications: close 30 September 2026, and late ones will not be considered s

If your programme is in Health Sciences, check its deadline on the UL website, because some programmes in that faculty close earlier than the main date.

Admission requirements explained

What is the APS?

UL uses the Admission Point Score (APS) system. Your APS is a number worked out from your final school marks, and each programme has its own minimum. Meeting the minimum APS for a programme does not guarantee a place. Selection depends on how many spaces are available and how you rank against other applicants.

NSC (Matric) applicants

For diploma programmes you need four 20-credit subjects at NSC achievement level 3 or higher, and the APS your chosen programme requires. Degree programmes are generally more demanding. Your faculty’s admission requirements list the exact subjects and levels. l

NCV (National Certificate Vocational) applicants

The requirements reported for NCV applicants are:

  • Degrees: three fundamental subjects at 60% and four vocational subjects at 70%
  • Diplomas: three fundamental subjects at 50% and three vocational subjects at 60%.

Older Senior Certificate holders

If you finished Grade 12 before 2008, you can apply with a Senior Certificate that carries full university exemption, by converting your symbols to an APS.

Documents you’ll need

Scan these before you open the portal, so the upload step doesn’t slow you down:

  • Your ID if you’re a South African citizen, or your passport if you’re international
  • A parent or guardian’s ID or passport if you’re under 18 (this is also required at that age
  • Academic results: current Grade 11 or 12 results, or your final NSC certificate if you’ve matriculated
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of payment for the application fee
  • A full academic record if you’re transferring from another institution

Use clear, readable scans. Blurry or incomplete uploads are one of the most common causes of delays.

Application fees

Unlike some universities, UL charges a non-refundable application fee. Reported amounts are R200 for South African applicants and R750 for international applicants. These figures come from third-party sites, so confirm the current amount on the UL portal before you pay.

Step-by-step: how to apply online

  1. Go to www.ul.ac.za and open the online application section. UL accepts online applications only, with no paper-based process for undergraduates.
  2. Create your profile with a valid email address and cell number you check often. UL contacts applicants by SMS or email.
  3. Fill in your personal and school details exactly as they appear on your ID and results.
  4. Choose your programmes. List a backup or two in case your first choice is full.
  5. Upload your documents.
  6. Pay the application fee and keep your proof of payment.
  7. Review everything, then submit.
  8. Save your student number. You can log in with it to track your application status.

If you already have a student number, one guide says to log in to I-Enabler, go to Academic Application, accept the rules, and continue with your school details and preferences

After you submit

  • Track your status. Log in regularly with your student number.
  • Watch your phone and email. Offers and requests for extra documents arrive this way.
  • Don’t assume you’re in. Until you get an official offer, your application is still being assessed.
  • Apply for residence if you need it. Residence applications are separate and follow their own process. UL’s residence page explains that applying does not guarantee a place in residence. Check the current 2027 steps on the UL site. ul
  • Think about funding early. If you’ll rely on NSFAS or a bursary, look up their deadlines separately, because they don’t follow UL’s dates.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Apply early. Applying between April and July was recommended to improve your chances, so next year’s applicants should note this.
  • Apply for more than one programme. A backup option protects you if your first choice is full.
  • Prepare documents in advance.
  • Double-check your details. Typos in your ID number or marks can cause problems later.
  • Be realistic about your APS. Compare your results to your programme’s requirements before you choose.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the last day, as the closing date is firm
  • Uploading unreadable or incomplete documents
  • Using an email address or phone number you rarely check
  • Skipping the residence application and assuming it’s automatic
  • Relying on old information from previous years, since dates and fees change

Final thoughts

UL offers a wide range of programmes, a strong regional reputation and NSFAS eligibility. With the main deadline falling today, the most useful thing you can do is open www.ul.ac.za, gather your documents and submit. Always confirm deadlines, fees and requirements on the official UL site, since some details above come from third-party sources.
