There is no online application portal for this internship. The “Apply Now” link in the advert goes to the vacancies page above. You download the Z83 form there, complete it, and send or hand in your application by post or in person.

About the Programme

The Department runs this internship as part of its skills development work. It supports national and provincial goals such as the National Development Plan Vision 2030. The idea is simple. Unemployed graduates get two years of structured, real workplace experience in a provincial government department. That experience makes them far more employable afterwards.

The programme is fully structured. You are placed in a unit, you learn on the job, and you receive a monthly stipend throughout.

An internship is not a permanent job, and it doesn’t guarantee one. It gives you experience, references and a realistic picture of how the public service works, which employers value.

Who Can Apply?

You should meet all of these requirements:

  1. You are unemployed.
  2. You hold a relevant qualification. The Department accepts any of these from a recognised university, university of technology or TVET college:
    • a three-year Degree (NQF 7)
    • an Advanced Diploma (NQF 7)
    • a National Diploma (NQF 6)
    • an Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma (NQF 8)
  3. You have never done a government internship. You must not have benefited from any national, provincial or local government (municipality) internship programme before.
  4. Your qualification matches the stream you apply for. Each post lists its own minimum qualification.

Foreign qualifications must come with an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Getting this done is your responsibility, so start early.

The Department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Suitably qualified candidates from designated groups are given preference under the Employment Equity Act.

What Fields Are Available?

The internships are spread across five programmes. Below is a summary. Always check the PDF for the exact qualification and reference number of the post you want.

Programme 1: Administration

  • Office of the MEC: Office support (Public Administration). This post is at Dube TradePort, Durban.
  • Office of the HOD: Office support, risk and integrity management, and internal audit.

  • Tourism Development: 6 posts for Tourism Management or Ecotourism graduates.
  • Trade and Sector Development: Strategic industrial interventions (5 posts), agribusiness and agro-processing, trade and investment promotion, forestry and furniture, the creative economy, and the Office of the DDG.

Programme 4: Economic Research, Strategy and Planning

  • Policy and Planning: Economics, Town and Regional Planning, or Geo-Information graduates.
  • Research and Modelling: BCom Honours graduates.

Programme 5: Environmental Management Services

  • Environmental Management: 30 posts for graduates with a Degree in Environmental Sciences. This is the largest single stream. Posts are in district offices across the province, from Amajuba and uThukela to eThekwini, iLembe and Zululand.

Tip: If your qualification fits more than one stream, you can look at applying for each. Use the correct reference number each time. Examples are SCM-27/29, Enviro-27/29 and DistrictOffice-27/29.

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Download the advert and find the stream that matches your qualification. Note its reference number.
  2. Download the Z83 form using the link above. It must be the new Z83 that took effect in January 2021. Older versions are not accepted.
  3. Complete the Z83 in full. Initial the pages, sign and date it. Missing or undisclosed information can disqualify you automatically.
  4. Prepare an updated, detailed CV. Write all start and end dates for jobs or studies as DD/MM/YYYY.
  5. Write and sign an affidavit stating that you have never benefited from a national, provincial or local government internship. Commissioners of Oaths at police stations usually do this quickly.
  6. Attach the affidavit to your Z83 and CV. You don’t need certified copies of your qualifications now. Those come later if you are shortlisted.
  7. Submit your application by one of the methods below, before the deadline.

Since the deadline is two days away, hand delivery to the nearest office is the safest choice. Post may not arrive in time.

Your Application Checklist

  • Fully completed, initialled, signed and dated Z83 (2021 version)
  • Updated and detailed CV
  • Signed affidavit confirming no previous government internship
  • Correct reference number written on your application
  • Later, if shortlisted: certified copies of your ID, qualifications and other requested documents
  • SAQA evaluation certificate, only if you hold a foreign qualification

What Happens After You Apply?

  • Shortlisting: If you are shortlisted, Human Resources will contact you. You must hand in certified documents on or before the day of your interview.
  • Possible competency test: Shortlisted candidates may be asked to write one.
  • Security and background checks: Appointment depends on a positive outcome from the State Security Agency. They verify your security clearance, qualifications, citizenship and previous employment. The Department also contacts HR at your current or past employers, not only your listed referees.
  • No news? If you haven’t heard anything three months after the closing date, treat your application as unsuccessful.
  • The Department’s right to withhold: It may decide not to fill posts. Keep applying elsewhere in the meantime.

Practical Tips to Strengthen Your Application

  • Match your stream exactly. Check that your degree or diploma is on the list for that reference number. Applications that don’t meet the minimum qualification are unlikely to go further.
  • Don’t skip Z83 sections. Incomplete forms are the most common reason for automatic disqualification.
  • Keep dates consistent. Your CV and Z83 should tell the same story, with every employment and study period in DD/MM/YYYY format.
  • Get the affidavit done now. It’s easy to forget, and missing it can cost you your place.
  • Make a full copy of everything you submit. Note the date and place you handed it in.
  • Apply close to home. Many posts are in district offices. Choosing one near you saves on transport costs during a stipend-paid internship.
  • Prepare certified copies in advance. If shortlisted, you’ll have very little time.
  • Only trust official sources. The Department never charges a fee for applications. Be wary of anyone asking for payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an online application link?
No. The official page hosts the advert and the Z83 form, but you submit on paper by post or hand delivery.

Can I apply with a TVET qualification?
Yes, if it is a National Diploma (NQF 6) or higher from a TVET college and matches the stream’s minimum qualification.

I did an internship at a private company. Can I still apply?
The restriction covers national, provincial and local government internships. Private sector experience is not mentioned as a barrier.

How much is the stipend?
The advert says interns get a monthly stipend or allowance but gives no amount. Ask the contact person if you need the figure.

Does this page also list jobs?
The same vacancies page lists other notices from the Department. Right now it includes a call for nominations for local committee members of the KwaZulu Economic Regulatory Authority, closing 16 October 2026.

Who do I contact with questions?
Ms Winno Mkhulise, at 033 264 2684, 079 251 9525 or [email protected].

Final Word

This is a rare chance to get two years of paid public-sector experience in fields from finance and IT to tourism, environmental science and law. With 138 posts across the province, there is a good chance one suits your qualification. The deadline is very close, so check your reference number, complete your Z83, sign your affidavit and deliver your application before the closing date on 2 October 2026.

I can also put this article into a Word document or formatted page if you’d like to publish it.
